#124: Accidental Disordered Eating & Healing from the Binge-Restrict Cycle

A dear friend and past client joins us in this revisited episode to talk about accidental disordered eating, healing from the restrict-binge cycle, and divesting from body shame.

By now you’ve heard me talk about the many ways in which diet culture is a master of disguise. It often masquerades as wellness, health, and self-care, making it tricky to recognize. It tells us that skipping meals is "intermittent fasting," that tracking every bite is "mindful eating," that obsessing over ingredient labels is "righteous, and that cutting out entire food groups is a "cleanse." These behaviors, though packaged in shiny, health-conscious wrapping, are actually forms of disordered eating.

The problem is, these seemingly innocent habits can morph into something more sinister. What starts as a "health kick" can quickly spiral into an obsession, leading to anxiety around food, social withdrawal, and a host of physical health issues. It’s like trying to navigate a maze with no exit, where the end goal keeps shifting farther away.

Almost two years ago (what!? time flies!), I had a very special client (and now friend) on the pod to talk about falling into the trap of accidental disordered eating. We’re revisiting that episode this week, and it’s worth a listen if you relate to pursuing “healthy eating”, only to end up deep in a stressful relationship with food.

Listen to hear more about…

  • The ways “healthy eating” can easily become disordered

  • The normalization of disordered eating

  • How to heal from the binge-restrict cycle

  • What it takes to divest from a lifetime of food rules and body shame

  • And so much more!!
